From box office breakthroughs to console compatibility updates, here’s a look at the key developments across the gaming industry in early April.

### A Minecraft Movie breaks box office records

Despite mixed reviews, *A Minecraft Movie* became the highest-grossing video game adaptation on its opening weekend in North America, earning $163M in just three days. Globally, it reached $314M — just $42M shy of Warner Bros’ all-time record with *Barbie*.

The Minecraft phenomenon shows no sign of slowing:  
— 300M+ copies sold  
— 170M monthly active players  
— 1.3T+ YouTube video views  
A follow-up movie seems all but certain.

### April 2 “Liberation Day” market shock and rebound

On April 2, dubbed “Liberation Day,” markets took a hit following the announcement of wide-reaching U.S. tariffs. While major electronics and semiconductors were partially exempt, video game consoles were not — raising concerns across the industry.

Surprisingly, most major gaming companies (EA, Square Enix, Capcom, Take-Two) quickly recovered their share prices, demonstrating notable market resilience.

### Switch 2: New details and compatibility challenges

Nintendo revealed more information about the upcoming Switch 2:  
— GameCube games will be added to the classic library for Switch Online users (with a dedicated controller required)  
— Over 120 existing Switch games will not be supported at launch due to a mix of emulation and hardware compatibility limitations
